Why Choose Teak for Your Outdoor Furniture

Wooden garden furniture should always be made from a hardwood such as teak because it is far better able to stand up to the harsh elements than softwood. Particularly in this country with its very changeable weather across all four seasons, being able to leave your furniture outside no matter what the weather is a major consideration. Teak seats and tables are the ideal choice for homes, restaurants and cafés because it shouldn’t need to be replaced for a good couple of decades if properly maintained.

Another major reason for choosing teak over other kinds of hardwood, is that it is resistant to termites and wood worm. This advantage of teak over oak, for example, was first seen when Chinese shipbuilders started to build their ships from teak and found that it didn’t get destroyed. It also proved successful on the water, resisting warping and shrinkage and not rotting, even repelling the water because of its high oil content.

If you have been put off buying garden tables and chairs until now because you have been worried about what will happen when it rains or snows, then now is the time to stop worrying. Our beautiful teak furniture will stand the test of time. With so few nice days in the year, when the good weather does hit, you’ll be able to get outside and enjoy it. All you need to do is to remember to bring in any cushions at the end of each day, as these are not weather-resistant!

When it comes to wooden garden furniture, quality comes first. It’s all too easy to overlook this aspect and instead focus on price, ultimately meaning you make a poor decision. Choosing low-quality furniture can only ever lead to disappointment and furniture that won’t live up to expectations, so it’s important to choose wisely. You need to consider the quality of the materials as well as the manufacture, and if you come to us you can expect the best of both.

Wooden Planters Add to Your Garden

The garden is one of the most relaxing places in the home. These quite spaces are perfect for enjoying the sunshine, taking in a good novel, or even just forgetting about a long and stressful day. Often, after an outdoor space has been kitted out with garden furniture, it can still feel like there’s something missing. Including some wooden planters in your garden can add a touch of variety and interest to even the smallest of outdoor spaces.

Whether you have acres of outdoor space to work with, of just a small balcony on a one bedroom flat, anyone can use planters. They can benefit any outdoor space. Planting some colourful plants and flowers in your wooden planters can bring another dimension to your garden, while being much more convenient than creating flower beds.

Wooden planters can be used to draw the eye to focal points in your garden, such as towards trees or around dining areas. They can be used to line driveways, adding a touch of colour and beauty to an otherwise dull area. They can even be used by windows to create a beautiful garden view.

Wooden planters made from cedar or teak will last a lifetime. They will look beautiful yet understated, and can be purchased to match your existing garden furniture, such as garden tables. You can even apply a coloured stain to them for a more unique look. Whether you prefer a more traditional or modern style, wooden planters will fit in perfectly.

Time to get to work on your garden

You may find that you are unhappy with the state of your garden, which is a real shame because it could be fantastic. Essentially, underneath all the weeds and overgrown grass is a gem of a space ideal for relaxing and entertaining. Time to get to work and get it sorted out.

Once you’ve cut everything back and replanted, you might want to think about giving your garden a few classy and practical touches. How about buying some wooden garden furniture. Being able to sit out in your garden on a lovely sunny day is one of life’s great pleasures. Just lounging around and unwinding with a good book or a nice cool drink. Maybe have friends round for a barbecue or small gathering.

If you get some wooden benches ordered everyone can sit down, relax and get comfortable. They’re tough, durable and look great, giving your garden a lovely finishing touch. So where’s the best place to get hold of some great value wooden garden benches or garden chairs? Well, as with almost anything these days, I start online. The deals are great, the service is fast. I hate the high street or the garden centre because of the long queues and wasted time. Shopping online means I can order in wooden garden furniture with just a few clicks of my mouse and then there it is, delivered to my door. No lugging the stuff home in the car. All you have to do is assemble it and put it where you want.

Caring for Wooden Garden Furniture

A set of wooden garden furniture can make your outdoor space beautiful as well as functional.  While you may use your furniture every day during the summer, it’s often forgotten about during the winter.  The harsh winter climate can easily wear and damage wooden garden furniture, so it’s vital that you care for it so it can withstand everything that winter throws at it.

If you have space, you should store your wooden garden furniture, such as bar stools, away for the winter.  Wooden furniture is susceptible to cracking and splintering in cold weather.  Anywhere it will be sheltered from the elements, such as a shed, will be ideal.  If you don’t have the space to store your furniture away, you should put waterproof covers over the furniture during the winter.  Be sure to check it regularly for any damage that may have occurred.

You should apply sealant on your wooden garden benches, tables and chairs once a year, ideally before the winter months.  Sealant will protect your wood and stop it from soaking up rainwater.  Before the winter, take your furniture out of storage and check it for any damage that may have occurred the previous year.  If there are any rough or splintered spots, they should be sanded back so that the sealant can be reapplied.  While you need only apply sealant to the damaged areas once a year, you should completely reseal it every three to five years to ensure your furniture is fully protected.

Introducing Climbing Plants to Your Garden

It would be great if we could buy a trellis with the plant fully grown. Climbing plants mark a commitment to your gardens stunning beauty, alongside your wooden garden furniture. So here are our top tips to give your climbing plants the best start in life:

Remember to prepare the ground with compost before planting, as young plants love tasty nutrients. Put a little into the hole you have dug for your plant too.

Do not fix your new trellis flush against the wall. Plants and air should be able to move freely behind it. Try attaching wooden support poles to the wall, then fix the trellis onto them (about 30cm off the ground).

Plant your climber about 20cm to 30cm away from the wall at a 45 degree angle (facing the trellis).

It is important that rainfall reaches the plant to keep it healthy. Take a little time to observe rainfall and check it will definitely reach the plants roots.

Attach temporary canes to support young climbing plants and help them to reach to bottom of the trellis. Trim away weak or dead leaves as the plant grows dead weight hinders growth.

Be sure to keep outdoor furniture and garden chairs stored out of the way. Unless you are growing triffids (which we doubt), it is unlikely that your spring growth will gobble up the lutyens garden bench you received at Christmas, however we still recommend marking a clear boundary for climbing plants. It should be one that does not involve garden benches.

Spring Planning: Eco Friendly Pest Control

We are pretty excited about spring. It is time to rejuvenate the wooden planters, break out the outdoor furniture and enjoy a little downtime on the new garden benches. It may be that you have spent your winter snuggled into the rattan conservatory furniture with a blanket, a good gardening magazine and some of the kids coloured pencils. How is that spring garden plan looking? However, as much as you want your garden to stay fresh and tidy, insects can have an effect on it.

Insecticide chemicals can be very harmful to children and animals. Since we do not want to expose the kids, the dog, ourselves or our gardens friendly natural inhabitants to unhealthy chemicals, these are the eco-friendly pest control measures which should be considered this spring. The kitchen is a great weapon. Collect eggshells, crush and sprinkle them around plants that need a little extra protection from slugs and snails. Of course salt works too, but crushed egg shells are more humane. A ring of eggshells around the vegetable patch could work wonders.

Learn about the life cycle of your most prolific garden insect invaders. Try companion planting, e.g. plant garlic amongst roses to control an aphid population, plant marigolds alongside peppers and tomatoes to repel root-gobbling nematodes.

If you need to call in the professional pest control unit, be sure to specify your aim for an eco-approach. Many companies are happy to cater to the chemical-free wishes of their customers. This means you will still be able to enjoy sitting in your outdoor furniture without having to worry about adverse chemicals in the air.

Wildlife to Look for in Your Winter Garden

We love local nature. Just because we are still buried under the icy blanket of winters coldest weather does not mean there is not plenty of bird and animal life to be found in your garden.

Mammals

Hibernation can be a tricky business. When packing away the garden furniture or having a spirited clear-out of the garage, be mindful of secret little slumbering animals like hedgehogs. Hedgehogs go for warm, dry, concealed, safe places to hibernate, so if your garden furniture is stored in a garage or shed like ours, it is the perfect spot for them, so be careful when packing the Christmas decorations into boxes on or underneath your stored away garden benches.

Also, we know a tidy garden and ordered outdoor furniture looks organised, but be very careful when raking leaves, moving outdoor furniture and wooden planters etc. Sleepy winter mice love snuggling in piles of leaves.

Grey squirrels, foxes and badgers may also pay a visit to your garden. Encourage animals by putting out a few tasty morsels and providing fresh water (which is tough for animals to find in icy conditions).

Birds

Hungry birds will let their guard down a little in the quest for food. Most UK winter gardens are frequented by finches and individual robins (robins are incredibly territorial.) Your provision of bird tables and bird feeders is more important than ever during the winter months. Make sure your bird table/bird feeder is in a great spot for viewing.

Insects

Be on the lookout for beetles, as these hardy little guys like to spend winter nestled under your wooden planters.

Buying garden furniture sets to make the most of sunny days

It does not matter what time of the year it is- when the sun shines over Britain we all want to spend time outside in our gardens or on our patios. In the summer it may be more common to see people outside eating barbeques and relaxing on their wooden garden furniture. Just because it is a few degrees colder in autumn is not going to stop us making the most of a sunny day now is it?

Many people see the garden as an extension to the rest of their home and so they should as many estate agents and property experts say that having an area to place garden table furniture shows the full potential of the garden to buyers viewing the property. Likewise if you can show it can be used all year round this may be very useful to parents with young children who love to spend time outdoors. Additionally if the family love to entertain but do not allow smoking in the house having a relaxing outdoor area complete with lighting and wooden garden furniture is a great way to make your guests feel welcome and not as if you are putting them outside in the cold.

Even if you do not like gardening or do not have pets you will always use your garden for something. If you love to write, what is more inspirational than sitting on one of your wooden garden chairs listening to the birds chirping in the trees? Consider your garden as another room in your house and you will always find a use for it.
