Ethical Teak Furniture
Teak is a slow growing hardwood, which means great durability and strength with a lovely fine grain, but unfortunately it also means the wood isn’t as quick or cheap to produce when compared to faster growing species, like pine. When used in garden furniture sets, especially in garden planters and in wet environments, pine rots easily and doesn’t last long. It also lacks the fine grain, beautiful finish and rich colour of a well made piece of teak furniture.
Originally a rainforest tree, teak, like mahogany, has suffered from over-exploitation. Grown in the warm climate of south east Asia, both species are vulnerable to unscrupulous (and sometimes illegal) logging operations and a lack of protection. However, ethical teak is available, and we ensure all your teak garden furniture comes from ethically sourced timber. The raw material for Chic Teak furniture comes from Javanese plantations owned by the Indonesian government, not from the rainforests.
While the timber does have to be transported quite a distance before it be turned into garden chairs, park benches, Versailles planters, and the rest of our teak garden furniture collection, there is an ethical argument for durable products. While a pine garden table might last one or two years before decay sets in and it needs to be replaced, teak garden furniture will last for years and years.
We at Chic Teak care about the sources of our wood, and our collection of ethical teak garden furniture meets the highest standards.
